It is estimated that nearly 20 percent of Alzheimer’s patients experience a condition known as sundowning, according to the data that is provided by the Alzheimer’s Association. Although the exact cause of sun downing is unknown, certified nursing assistants need to be better prepared for the shift in emotional and physical states that residents experience as the sun begins to set in those who suffer from this illness.
Certified nursing assistants play an important role when it comes to nutritional needs of those with different dementias.  As professional caregivers we understand the health dangers of being overweight, but being underweight can pose just as much as a health danger too.
As an CNA it is important to try to understand why a person with Alzheimer may be behaving in ways you find difficult when bathing them, and learn how to avoid making them worse.  Bathing is often the most challenging activity for both the CNA  and the person with Alzheimers.
