CNA Skill Feeding a Dependent Patient

One of the CNA skill you will need to learn is how to feed a dependent patient.  Certified nursing assistants will need to consult the patient whenever they would like any assistance in eating. If they answer yes, then determine what is the challenge in which the individual is struggling with. At times, the patients may discover opening beverages  or cutting food into smaller sized pieces quite complicated. A nurse aide will have to do these things for them.

In the event that a patient has visual challenges CNAs  will need to provide only a few spoken suggestions to the patient.  Subsequently, the patient may accomplish the task by themselves.

When a patient is not effective at moving as a result of severe weakness or paralysis, then the CNA will need to cut the foods into portions and feed each bite to them. Individuals should not be hurried into eating and must not be pressured into consuming more than they desire to eat.  Make certain that they are not having a difficult time with the consistency or size of the food.  Before placing another bite into the mouth, be certain that the individual being feed has chewed and swallowed the existing bite thoroughly. You may also test the temperature of the food. Extremely hot food can potentially cause wounds inside the mouth.

CNA Skills: Steps to Feed a Dependent Patient

  • Help the resident with washing hands
  • Position resident in an appropriate eating position.
  • Verify dietary card for name and diet. Inspect tray for accurate food, condiments, and utensils.
  • Place plate on table and describe food.
  • Place napkin or garment protector under resident's chin and the upper body.
  • You may then ask resident what food is desired.
  • Fill spoon partially full with food. Guide food to unaffected side of mouth.
  • Allow resident enough time to chew and swallow. Provide fluids as resident wishes.
  • Wipe resident's mouth as needed.
  • Clear away napkin and garment protector and tray.
  • Clean resident's hands and face.
  • Take a measurement of and record intake.
